Prviate Staff tutoring guidance
Hollymount Primary School recognises that some families may choose to arrange private tutoring for their child. The school permits members of staff to provide private tutoring, including the use of school classrooms after the school day, subject to the principles below.
Key Principles
- Private arrangement: Any tutoring arrangement is a private agreement between the member of staff and the child’s parent/carer. It is not organised, commissioned or provided by Hollymount Primary School.
- School responsibility: The school accepts no responsibility for the tutoring arrangement, including its content, quality, outcomes, fees, cancellations or any other agreement made between the tutor and family.
- Children currently taught by the member of staff: Staff must not privately tutor children whom they currently teach directly as part of their class This helps to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and avoids potential conflicts of interest.
- Other Hollymount pupils: Staff may privately tutor other children who attend Hollymount, provided they do not currently teach the child directly.
- Use of school premises: With the agreement of the school, staff may use an appropriate classroom or teaching space after school for private tutoring. Use of the premises does not mean that the tutoring is endorsed, managed or provided by the school.
- Payment: All fees and payment arrangements are agreed directly between the member of staff and the family. Payments must not be made through the school.
- Safeguarding and professional conduct: Staff remain expected to follow the school’s safeguarding procedures, Staff Code of Conduct and professional expectations while on school premises. Any safeguarding concerns arising during tutoring must be reported in accordance with the school’s usual safeguarding procedures.
- School resources: Reasonable use of the classroom and existing teaching resources is permitted, but staff should not use school printing, consumable resources or equipment extensively for private commercial purposes without prior agreement.
- No pressure on families: Staff must not actively encourage or place pressure on families to purchase private tutoring, and a child’s access to or progress within the school curriculum must never be dependent upon receiving private tuition.
- School discretion: Permission to use school premises for private tutoring is at the discretion of the Headteacher and may be withdrawn if an arrangement creates a safeguarding, professional, operational or conflict-of-interest concern.
For Parents and Carers
Parents choosing private tutoring should understand that they are entering into an agreement directly with the individual tutor. Any questions about fees, timings, cancellations, teaching arrangements or the tutoring itself should therefore be discussed directly with the tutor rather than the school.
The school’s role is limited to permitting appropriate members of staff to use school premises for these private arrangements.
