Year 1 update

This page is updated every two weeks - W/C 4 May 2026

Message from the teachers

Dear Year 1 families,

It was lovely to see so much support at the mini-marathon a couple of weeks ago. The children should be so proud of their efforts, it was wonderful to see them try so hard and having a good time while doing so! We also have another sporting event happening today with our Key Stage 1 Sports Day. We hope you enjoy cheering on the children and we are excited to see the children try their best and work as teams in their houses.

Phonics Screening Check

As mentioned previously, please find attached some information about the phonics screening check outlining what is involved. We have now started practising alien words in class which will form part of the screening check. The home learning sheets continue to be a great way of practising the sounds we have been revising this week. The phonics screening check will be administered the week of the 8th of June.

Trip Update

On the Friday 22nd May, we will be taking the children on a trip to Chessington Zoo. Children will be required to bring a packed lunch (nut-free and no fizzy drinks). It would also be great if they could be provided with a small snack, a water bottle and ideally a small rucksack to carry these items. Depending on the weather, please send them with a light coat and/or apply suncream before they come to school. Although it is a Friday, children should were school uniform as they will not be doing PE, but they are allowed to wear trainers instead of school shoes for comfort.

An update from the classroom and the teaching and learning taking place

Literacy Update

In Literacy, we have started looking at the short film ‘The Blue Umbrella’ as our next text. The children will be working towards creating a storyboard for their own film based on this short film. We are continuing to practise all our basic Year 1 skills like capital letters, full stops and letter formation, as well as adding the suffix ‘-ing’ to the end of words. We can’t wait to see the children show off their creativity in their writing!

Maths Update

In Maths we have started looking at the topic of Multiplication and Division. We have been practising basic skills such as counting in 2s, 5s and 10s in addition to grouping and sharing objects. You can practise this at home by counting household objects in 2s and 5s or putting items into equal groups. In addition, please can you practise counting backwards in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
